Global citizenship education brings together awareness-raising, training, information and research that bring international cooperation, human rights, equality, social justice and a culture of peace closer to citizens. In Extremadura it is part of the legal framework for development cooperation: the regional Law 3/2023 of 29 March on International Cooperation and Solidarity refers in article 6.c to «educación para la ciudadanía global y la transformación social» (“global citizenship education and social transformation”, our translation).

Who funds it in Extremadura?

Provincial Council of Badajoz. Its 2026 call allocates €112,987.90 to 19 organisations. Most receive €6,000 and none less than €5,000. It pays special attention to towns of fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. The decision was published in the Provincial Official Gazette on 14 September 2026.

Government of Extremadura (AEXCID). The regional Official Gazette of 29 June 2026 published the grants from the 2025 call: €179,903.84 for four projects in Extremadura (summary in Spanish).

What does Cooperantes Seniors do?

The association is one of the 19 organisations funded by the Provincial Council of Badajoz’s 2026 call, alongside organisations such as Médicos del Mundo, the Spanish Red Cross, Cáritas Diocesana de Mérida-Badajoz and Farmacéuticos Mundi (news in Spanish). The name, towns and calendar of its project have not yet been published.

Its members include people with human rights experience: in 2024 a member, a retired lawyer and human rights expert, spoke at SEPAD’s official event for the International Day of Older Persons.
